The past that hasn't gone anywhere

I remember the block-heeled shoes that stood by the mirror in my mother's room. She never explained where they came from. They just stood there.

When I look at Cherry, it's not nostalgia. Nostalgia is when you want to go back. This is different: recognizing something that you, it turns out, have always known. The heart shape on the strap, the contrasting colors - it's not about the fifties. It's about the fact that some things were true then and remain true now.

I put them on and go. Nowhere special. Just walking.
